Why a new discipline appeared
For twenty-five years, being found meant ranking. You published a page, a search engine ranked it, and a person clicked it. Every part of that chain assumed a human would scan a list of links and choose one.
That assumption is breaking. Around 69% of Google searches now end without a single click (Similarweb) — the answer is delivered on the results page itself, or inside a chat interface that never showed a list of links at all. When someone asks ChatGPT "what's the best payroll software for a 20-person startup," there is no page one. There is an answer, and it names a handful of companies.
Being named in that answer is a different problem from ranking, and it needs a different discipline. That discipline is GEO.
How an AI engine actually decides what to cite
Modern AI answers are not pulled from the model's memory alone. Most run a retrieval step: the engine reformulates your question into several searches, fetches a set of candidate documents, ranks passages within them, and then writes an answer grounded in the few passages it trusts most. Roughly five sources typically survive into the final citation list.
That pipeline has four gates, and GEO is the work of passing all four:
- Discoverability — the engine's crawler can reach your page, and your content exists in the indexes it queries.
- Parseability — the page's structure, headings and schema make it clear what the content is and who it's about.
- Extractability — a specific passage answers a specific question cleanly enough to be lifted and quoted.
- Trust — enough independent signals exist that the engine is willing to attach your name to its answer.
Most businesses fail at gates three and four. Their content is written to persuade a reader who has already landed, not to answer a question in isolation — and nothing outside their own website corroborates who they are.
What the research says works
The foundational academic work here is the Princeton GEO study, which tested content modifications across thousands of queries and measured the change in AI visibility. Its findings are unusually actionable:

Read those together and a pattern emerges. Engines reward content that behaves like a good source: it makes specific claims, attributes them, and quantifies them. And they reward brands the wider web talks about — Ahrefs found brand mentions correlate with AI visibility roughly three times more strongly than backlinks do.
What GEO is not
Three misconceptions are worth clearing up, because they waste money.
GEO is not keyword stuffing for robots. You cannot write "best GEO agency" forty times and expect to be recommended. Engines are summarizing, not matching strings.
GEO is not a single file you upload. llms.txt is a useful convention, and we implement it, but it is not a switch that makes you visible. Treat any agency selling it as the centerpiece with suspicion.

Why it's worth doing now
Two reasons. First, the traffic converts: Seer Interactive measured ChatGPT-referred visitors converting at 15.9% against 1.76% for classic organic search. A person arriving on a recommendation has already been pre-sold by a source they trust.
Second, the field is young enough that consistency wins. Engines learn from repeated, structured, corroborated signals — so every citation you earn makes the next one likelier, and makes you harder to displace. The brands establishing themselves as the canonical answer in their category this year will be expensive to unseat next year.

- ✓ Rewrite for extraction. Lead every page with a direct answer, then support it with sourced specifics.
- ✓ Build corroboration. Profiles, mentions and citations off your own domain, all describing you the same way.

Is GEO the same as AEO? +
In practice, yes. GEO (generative engine optimization) and AEO (answer engine optimization) describe the same goal — being the source an AI system uses when it answers. GEO is the more common term for generative chat interfaces; AEO is sometimes used more broadly to include featured snippets and voice assistants. We use them interchangeably.
How long does GEO take to show results? +
Faster than classic SEO. Generative engines strongly favour fresh content, so early citation movement often appears within weeks of shipping answer-ready pages. Meaningful share-of-voice shifts against established competitors usually take two to four months of consistent iteration.
Can I do GEO myself? +
