Why Perplexity is the best starting point
Two reasons, both practical.
First, it shows its work. Every answer carries numbered inline citations you can read directly. There's no inference required about whether you were used as a source — you either appear or you don't. For a business starting a GEO programme, that immediate feedback loop is worth a great deal.
Second, it moves fast. Perplexity re-retrieves aggressively, so changes you ship show up in days rather than months. It's the closest thing the field has to a test environment.
What it appears to favour
Direct, self-contained answers
Perplexity's synthesis leans heavily on passages that resolve a question without surrounding context. Pages built as a sequence of question-headed sections, each answered immediately beneath the heading, give it far more to work with than narrative long-form.
Visible recency
Dates matter, and they need to be machine-readable — a "last updated" line in the visible content plus dateModified in your schema. Refreshing genuinely (new data, revised guidance) rather than cosmetically is the version that works.
Source-like writing
The Princeton GEO study findings apply strongly here: quantified claims with attribution get picked up more than assertions. Perplexity's whole product promise is verifiability, so content that is itself verifiable is a natural fit.
Independent corroboration
Perplexity frequently pulls from community discussion, review platforms and industry publications alongside brand sites. If the only source describing your company is your company, you're a weaker candidate than a competitor discussed in three places.
Track it separately from everything else
This is the mistake worth avoiding. Analyses comparing the domains cited by different AI engines have found remarkably little overlap — in some studies around 11% between ChatGPT and Perplexity. They query different indexes and weight sources differently.
So "our AI visibility is 30%" is a meaningless aggregate. You need per-engine numbers, because the fix for Perplexity absence is often different from the fix for ChatGPT absence.
A simple weekly routine
- ✓ Keep a fixed list of 15–25 questions a real customer would type.
- ✓ Run them in Perplexity on a set day each week, logging whether you're cited, which URL, and which competitors appear.
- ✓ Note which of your pages get cited — those are your proven formats; replicate their structure.
- ✓ For questions where a competitor is cited and you aren't, read their cited passage. The gap is usually obvious and fixable.
Use it as a diagnostic for the others. Because Perplexity exposes its sources, it tells you which of your pages are extractable at all. A page Perplexity never cites is unlikely to be doing well in engines that hide their reasoning.
Frequently asked
Is PerplexityBot separate from other crawlers? +
Yes. Perplexity operates its own user agents — PerplexityBot for indexing and a separate user-triggered fetcher. Both should be allowed in robots.txt if you want to be citable there.
Why does Perplexity cite Reddit and forums so often? +
Because they contain direct, experience-based answers to specific questions — exactly the passage shape its synthesis favours. It also reflects a genuine trust signal: multiple independent people discussing something is stronger evidence than one company describing itself.
How quickly do changes show up? +
Often within days, sometimes faster, because retrieval runs live against a frequently-refreshed index. This makes Perplexity the fastest feedback loop available for testing whether a content change actually improved extractability.
